Mayland Long introduces himself here, but should his own words not suffice:
Long is-- or more accurately used to be-- a Chinese imperial dragon, "thirty yards long and solid black, with a head like a chrysanthemum." He is some five thousand years old, give or take a stray century. At some point in his existence, he became fascinated by the human quest for 'truth', and resolved to discover this truth himself. The dragon's search took him the length and breadth of the world, and even to Hell itself when the fallen angel Lucifer tricked him there to serve as guardian to Hell's entrance. He was freed by the Lappish witch Saara and helped her in her quest to fight the Father of Lies and help the former angel Raphael. Following this, he resumed his searching, and was eventually led to a Taoist teacher named Yung Chung-jo. Yung Chung-jo could not satisfy the dragon's quest, but he did give him a prophecy: that he would find both his master and the truth he sought, but that he would also lose all that was his. The next morning, Oolong awoke to find Yung Chung-jo dead-- and himself in human form.
Eventually the now-human Long made his way to San Francisco, following other words of Yung's prophecy, and there he waited. This is the point from which I am beginning to write Long, but it is not the end of his story. Some time after he settles in San Francisco, he meets a woman named Martha Macnamara, a musician from New York visiting California to see her daughter. Her daughter, however, has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and Long becomes embroiled in an increasingly complicated web of intrigue as he attempts to help Martha. His quest for truth is just beginning....
***
Physically, Long is described as a slim, slight, middle-aged man with dark skin and black hair and a rich voice. He is vaguely Chinese in appearance, especially his eyes; said eyes are normally dark and opaque, but when the light hits them they are amber. According to Liz Macnamara, they glow in the dark. Long's hands are unusually long-fingered, and he is unnaturally strong and fast. He favors dressing in good suits, and gives off an air of breeding, class, and stuffiness.

Mayland Long is not an original character. He is the creation of novelist R.A. MacAvoy, and appears in her book Raphael as a minor character, and as the central character in her Tea with the Black Dragon and its sequel Twisting the Rope. All three of these are excellent novels, and as MacAvoy is a much-underappreciated writer of fantasy, I highly advise you to look them up if Long's character as presented here interests you at all. You might also enjoy reading
sonofgranite, another MacAvoy character in TM.
John Lone/Zun Long is also not my creation, and belongs only to himself.
